SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) Workshop

Location: Saskatoon, SK

Candle/Span Room, Atrium Building,
111 Research Drive, Innovation Place, Saskatoon

TRLabs and the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) are pleased to present a workshop about Service-Orientation Architecture (SOA). SOA is an important design and integration approach that is based on the notion of well defined, loosely coupled services. The new generation of Web Services is one particular implementation of SOA. This workshop is primarily targeted at companies that want to gain a greater understand of how they can apply SOA to both legacy and new applications.

A common analogy for SOA is the popular children's toy: LEGO building blocks. Service-orientation turns your entire application portfolio - and that of your partners - into technological LEGO blocks that can be assembled in any number of configurations to meet changing business needs. But unlike a single LEGO block, which can only be used in one design at a time, a "service" can be used by several applications at once.

In this workshop, we present an overview of service-orientation and SOA. Starting with a high-level presentation of SOA and the underlying technologies, we present its basic building blocks, namely services, composite services (a.k.a. Workflows) and the ESB (Enterprise Service Bus). The workshop will also address key issues in integrating/transforming legacy applications, service mashups and the use of services for mobile devices.
